As fun as a dirty pleasure the Cannonball films can be, they are impossibly bad. The Gumball Rally was much better made!

Viggo Mortensen is an excellent actor... but why choosing the remake instead of the original?

Have a star for including Two-Lane Blacktop though!

Gumball Rally!

That’s the movie that introduced me to the Cobra, and the Cobra is the car that got me into cars.

I couldn’t find a good clip for the original Vanishing Point quickly. However, the original is far superior to the remake. The remake just threw out the whole point.

Holy cast list on Cannonball Run, I haven’t seen that movie in forever, but:

Burt Reynolds

Roger Moore

Farrah Fawcett

Dean Martin

Sammy Davis Jr.

Terry Bradshaw

Jackie Chan

Peter Fonda

That’s a good start...

It is, god I missed it, Good man! You are redeemed. I just find it odd how many car people I know that have never heard of Gumball. I prefer to Cannonball most of the time.

I haven’t seen the remake, and from what I’ve read I have no intention to do so.

Many moons ago I had the chance to have dinner with one of the scriptwriters of the original (although I don’t think I knew that at the time: he was better-known as a novelist). Due to some bizarre circumstances beyond my control I was not able to go.

As the song says, “regrets, I have a few”.

No they ain’t. Had Yates and Needham let a professional handle the script they would have been so much better.

It’s like Le Mans. It is extremely badly told (in fact there is no story. Lovely cars, yes). Also off-set McQueen acted like an ass (as he was wont to do) which didn’t make things easy for the crew. Or help the end result.

A side note: hopefully one day we’ll all be able admire McQueen’s roles (or his work as an actor) and stop idolising him. He was not exactly a very nice person.

I mean they are nowhere near as great as Gumball Rally, but still decent movies.

Also yeah people shouldn’t idolize other people. You get let down pretty hard.

I saw from your previous posts that you are also a fan of The Gumball Rally (cue secret handshake), so you know your films.

But to me, the Cannonball franchise was a huge missed opportunity. I do admit it is very nice that everyone in the films seemed to be having tons of fun shooting them - a bit like Red – or that we got to see Jack Elam again, for instance.

Regarding McQueen it irks me enormously – it started something like ten or fifteen years ago – this trend to call him “the king of cool” and so on, particularly among car journalists.

Your selection has a very clear “American road movie” theme, but if you’d consider a different kind of “road movie” I’d suggest you find about Goodbye Pork Pie.

It’s a little jewel of a film, set in a New Zealand not yet tainted by orcs and hobbits and such.

Ok ok, I see where you are coming from. The story line isn’t that great, but as a kid that didn’t matter as much as watching fast cars “race” across the US. They made a huge impression on me as a budding gear head and for that I think they are great. They could have also had a good story, but if they keep inspiring children to want cars and to go fast then I am happy.

Yea I remeber that. His hype is huge and I guess I can see why, but people on and off the screen are different people. I mean if he had been as nice a person as I hear Magnus Walker is off film, then it might have been a different thing, but even then people just shouldn’t be idolized. Admired and liked, sure, but making them a car god or whatever seems like too much.

It is also true that I saw The Gumball Rally when I was much younger so I was less critical of it from the beginning. When the Cannonball films appeared I was a little older, very much into cinema and therefore less likely to forgive their faults.

I agree 100% with that.

In any case we also have to remember that several artists and authors were (or are) absolute disgraceful as human beings - and yet their work can be exactly the opposite – even morally inspiring!

I just watched the original Cannonball Run last week. It is fun, but it definitely isn’t the greatest movie of all time. Reading Brock Yates’ book, it is clear he was disappointed in how the movie turned out. There is a remake in the works...

Alex Roy needs to be in the remake. Just to make it full circle. The cannonball run movies were comedies with cars though. Gumball rally was a car movie with a bit of comedy.
